The Chevy ordering process

As we mentioned above, you have one of two options when ordering a new Chevy vehicle from the factory. Let's look at these two methods so that you'll get a better idea of which one is more suited to you.

Completing the order online

Ordering your new Chevy online is certainly the quickest way to get an order placed. You'll save a lot of time by not having to meet with a salesperson and can complete it in the comfort of your own home. Imagine being able to order your new car or truck in your pajamas!

Chevy's website will walk you through the process of selecting the vehicle, configuration, trim level, color, and other options and packages. You'll submit your order at the end of the process, as soon as you've gone through financing options.

But doing it this way has some drawbacks. Not everyone is knowledgeable about the variety of packages and trims each model vehicle has to offer. While completing the order online by yourself can save you time if you know exactly what you are looking for, it can create a lot more spent time for those who aren't well versed in the options available.

Placing the order with your dealership

Many find it easier to build the vehicle with the specs they want online, but then print off the spec sheet to take to the dealership. While you're there, an experienced sales professional will go over the specs you proposed. They'll make helpful suggestions and answer any questions that you might have.

A qualified salesperson will know about each trim level, package, and add-ons available for the model of Chevy you are looking for. You might also be afforded the opportunity to test drive a similar model. This will help solidify whether or not the vehicle you are considering is the right fit for you.

How long does it take to order a vehicle from Chevy?

Ordering a new Chevy takes a significant amount more time than it did before the Covid-19 pandemic. Where the turnaround time for a brand-new vehicle from the factory used to be a matter of days or weeks, it is now a process that takes months.

Expect a minimum of 10 to 12 weeks for you to get possession of your new Chevy. While the assembly lines are still rolling, automakers have a shortage of one vital component that is needed to complete their vehicles. Though it's maybe frustrating, it's not a permanent state of affairs.

Ahead in this post, we'll address that shortage. For now just now that the industry is slowly starting to recover. Hopefully, the timeframe to get a new Chevy will shrink throughout 2022.

Can I track my order for my new Chevy or GM?

At one time you could track your new vehicle order through GM Authority. But due to logistical issues, they are no longer able to provide this service.

The site does state that if you visit the GM or Chevy websites, you can track them there with a bit of assistance. Initiate a live chat with a representative on the site. Provide them with the order number from the dealership.

The representative will be able to retrieve this information for you. They may provide you with an event code. Should this occur and you need to know what it means, GM Authority has a guide to decipher all of them that might pop up.

How long does it take for GM to make a truck?

Should all needed parts be on hand, it doesn't take as long as you might think to fully assemble a pickup truck. These vehicles require between 20 and 30 hours of labor from start to finish.

Any special add-on or mods performed by the factory will add a bit of time to it. This is especially true if you are having custom decals applied.

As we pointed out earlier in this post, the production of new vehicles is being stalled by a shortage of one part. This part that is in short supply is semiconductors. These microchips are required for your vehicle's onboard computer and other electronic equipment. What is making this happen?

Factory floor, car production lines.

Why is there a chip shortage?

The semiconductors are mostly produced by factories in Asia. In the earliest stages of the Covid-19 pandemic in March of 2020, many of them slowed production. Compounding this problem was a fire in one of the manufacturing plants in Japan

While automotive manufacturing slowed considerably in early to mid-2020, other electronics that require these chips boomed. With so many people working remotely, a surge in demand for computers, newer smartphones, tablets, and other devices demanded so many chips that a shortage occurred when vehicle assembly lines started rolling again.

With factories that produce these chips ramping up production and with the addition of new facilities being built, experts are hopeful that they can see an end to the shortage. Some say we'll see substantial moves by mid-2022, with others being less optimistic and predicting it will continue to have effects until well into 2023.

How many vehicles are waiting for chips?

In June of 2021, the Detroit Free Press reported that there were tens of thousands of newly assembled vehicles awaiting microchips. They showed photos of giant parking lots full of new trucks whose productions were stalled for lack of that one vital part. As 2021 wore on, this only got worse.

In September of that year, Auto News reported that there were nearly 70,000 cars in the United States that were now awaiting microchips. This is across all makes produced in this country, giving consumers little options on getting a new vehicle quickly.

Automakers began to cut production of new vehicles, some by as many as 200,000. This gives them time to catch up on finishing the ones already (mostly) constructed as the microchips trickle in to be installed.

In conclusion

Ordering a new Chevy vehicle can be done online or in-person with only a little bit of effort. While it can be quicker online, many prefer going to a dealership so that they can get their questions answered more thoroughly. A global microchip shortage has caused massive delays in the output of new vehicles which may continue well into 2023. Drive safe!
