Does The Lexus Blind Spot Monitor Beep?

The Lexus blind spot monitoring (BSM) feature alerts the driver if other vehicles, people, or objects are approaching from behind. Usually, you use the monitor when reversing the vehicle or transferring lanes. You can safely reverse your vehicle in crowded areas with the BSM, but does it beep when working? We did our research, and here's what we found.

Unlike other car models, the blind spot monitor of a Lexus will not beep while in use. Instead of a sound, the monitor will inform you with flashing warning lights on the exterior side view mirror. In that case, you should do manual blind-spot checking.

Learn more about your Lexus' BSM, how it works, and what you can do with it. Read on to learn how to activate the BSM and what other features work alongside the BSM.

Will The Lexus Blind Spot Monitor Beep?

Wooden Stair Treads

As mentioned, the Lexus' BSM does not beep. Instead, it will flash lights on the exterior mirrors to warn you. You will only hear a beep when you turn the monitor on or off. Moreover, you cannot add a beep to the system. In this case, you should keep an eye on the mirrors before you switch lanes or reverse.

It is natural to put warning lights on the side mirrors because the driver will see them rather than on the dashboard. With the lights flashing on the mirrors, it helps shift the driver's focus.

However, you might encounter difficulties when the sunlight is too strong and the lights become difficult to check. Additionally, heavy snow, ice, or other weather occurrences can also obstruct your view of the BSM's warning lights. In that case, you should clear the mirror to see the warnings.

What Can The Lexus Blind Spot Monitor Do?

All new Lexus models have a BSM. The monitor uses 4 quasi-millimeter radar sensors installed behind the rear bumpers.  It assists the driver by constantly observing the areas not visible when switching lanes and reversing in a parking space.

Switching Lanes

When switching lanes or checking any overtaking vehicle, you must use the blind spot monitor. You can avoid lane crashes that cause significant damage to the vehicle and severe injuries to the driver. The monitor can detect the following:

  • Vehicles from the adjacent lane that try to overtake your vehicle.
  • A vehicle within the detection area as it changes lanes.
  • When you are slowly overtaking another vehicle in the adjacent lane

A solid warning light flashes on the outer side mirrors. It appears if you indicate that you are changing lanes and an obstacle is present.

Reversing

The blind spot monitor works with the rear cross-traffic alert (RTCA) feature when backing up the vehicle. Both use the same sensor as part of the Lexus Safety System+. When the RTCA is on, it has a warning buzzer with flashing lights in the door mirrors. You can back up from a parking slot or driveway to the street with the help of the features.

Lexus Blind Spot Monitoring Detection Area

The left-hand mirror camera of the car, the camera helps to find blind spots, increasing the efficiency of seeing the left-turn camera of modern cars.

It can also help to know the detection area of your Lexus. Below are the approximate detection areas of the blind spot monitor:

  • From the rear bumper: 9.8 feet
  • Forward of the rear bumper: 3.3 feet
  • From the vehicle side: 11.5 feet, after 1.6 feet non-detection area

The detection area covers one lane wide on each side of the car. However, note that although the BSM is a helpful feature, it also has limitations.

What Vehicles Or Objects The Blind Spot Monitor Will Not Detect?

There are also undetectable vehicles and objects, even within the detection area of the BSM.  Listed below are the vehicles and objects it will not detect:

  • Pedestrians
  • Small vehicles like bikes or motorcycles
  • Guardrails, signage, walls, and other stationary objects
  • Vehicles two lanes across your vehicle
  • Vehicle following you on the same lane
  • Vehicles in the opposite lane
  • Vehicles you have overtaken rapidly

Even if the monitor shows no warnings, always inspect your driving environment to avoid accidents. The BSM only provides supplemental assistance when driving. It is still up to the driver's judgment on how to maneuver along the road.

How To Activate The Lexus Blind Spot Monitor?

A camera system in the top view mirror helps drivers see the vehicle's blind spots to reduce road accidents.

The process to activate the blind spot monitor of a Lexus depends on the model. The monitor is operational when you turn on the BSM switch and if the vehicle speed is approximately 25 mph.

When you start your vehicle, it automatically turns on. New models have a BSM button. However, for some old models, there is no button.

Follow the general steps below to turn on the BSM Lexus RX360:

  1. Find the BSM button on the left side of the steering column.
  2. Then, toggle it to the ON position. The green light turns on to indicate the activation.

Furthermore, the activation can vary with the model you have. The BSM button or switch can either be on the steering wheel or mirror controls. Turning on the BSM varies for these new Lexus models:

  • GS
  • LX
  • RX
  • ES
  • GX
  • LS
  • NX
  • RC
  • LC

For old Lexus models, press and hold the + and - buttons on the steering wheel for at least 2 seconds. A green light next to the button indicates that it is on. If the model does not have a BSM feature, you can buy and install an aftermarket part.

You can refer to your manual for more information about the BSM.

Yes, the monitor can fail. It will not work if there are issues. The multi-information display will tell you that the monitor is unavailable or malfunctioning. Some causes for the failure to detect are as follows:

  • Blocked sensors
  • Extreme hot or cold weather
  • Faulty sensors
  • Misaligned sensors
  • Voltage abnormality

You will have to bring the vehicle to a Lexus dealer to have the car inspected first. If you have a faulty sensor, your vehicle will need a replacement.
