How Long Is The Subaru Forester?

Overall length pertains to the vehicle's length from the farthest point out front to the farthest point at its back. The Forester's overall length is 4,640.6 mm or 182.7 inches.

Wheelbase length is the measurement between the center hubs of the front wheels and the rear wheels. A longer wheelbase typically means more cabin space and better ride quality.

The Forester's wheelbase length is 2,669.5 mm or 105.1 inches for all variants except the Wilderness trim.

The 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness has a wheelbase length of 2,664.5 mm or 104.9 inches.

How Wide Is The Subaru Forester?

Overall width pertains to the maximum width of a vehicle when it is measured at its widest point. This type of width usually excludes flexible mud flaps and side mirrors. The Subaru Forester's overall width is 1,816 mm or 71.5 inches, except for the Wilderness trim.

The Forester Wilderness is 1,833.9 mm (72.2 inches) wide. The extra width comes from additional plastic body claddings that should protect the vehicle from minor scratches from shrubs or bushes during off-road drives.

If the side mirrors are unfolded, then the Forester's width goes up to 2,065 mm or 81.3 inches.

Front track width refers to the distance between the center lines of a vehicle's front tires. This is measured from the two front tires' contact patch or the tires' points of contact on the ground.

The Forester's front track width is 1,564.6 mm or 61.6 inches except for the Wilderness trim. The Wilderness's front track width is 1,559.6 mm or 61.4 inches.

Rear track width, on the other hand, is the measurement between the center lines of the two rear tires, measured from the rear tires' contact patch.

The Forester's rear track width is 1,569.7 mm or 61.8 inches except for the Wilderness trim. The Wilderness variant's rear track width is the same as its front track width at 1,559.6 mm or 61.4 inches.

How High Is The Subaru Forester?

Overall height is the measurement from a flat level ground up to the vehicle's highest point. This height usually excludes exterior features like roof rails or antennae.

Moreover, overall height measurement is taken when the vehicle's wheels are properly inflated and when the vehicle has no cargo or passengers.

With the exception of the Wilderness variant, the Forester's overall height is 1,714.5 mm or 67.5 inches. If we include the roof rails, then the Forester's height increases slightly to 1,730 mm or 68.1 inches.

The Wilderness variant's overall height is 1,750 mm or 68.9 inches. If we add the roof rails, then this measurement goes up to 1,765.3 mm or 69.5 inches.

Ground clearance is the measurement from a flat level ground up to the vehicle's lowest point other than the tires.  Again, this measurement is taken when there are no cargo and/or passengers, and when the tires are properly inflated.

In other words, ground clearance represents the height of the tallest object or road obstacle that a vehicle can drive on without hitting or scraping the vehicle's underside.

With the exception of the Wilderness trim, all 2022 Forester variants' ground clearance is 221 mm (8.7 inches). The Wilderness trim comes with an impressive 233.7 mm (9.2 inches) of ground clearance.

Fording or wading depth refers to the maximum water depth that a car can wade through without damage risks to its components.

Subaru of America (SOA) has not yet released any official fording depth specifications for the 2022 Forester. However, in other markets, standard Forester variants with the same 8.7-inch ground clearance can wade through 19.7 inches (500 mm) of water.

The Wilderness variant, with its 9.2-inch ground clearance, can probably wade through deeper water.

Forester Angles

Approach angle refers to the maximum angle of a slope or ramp that a car can climb without scratching or scraping the ground.

Except for the Wilderness variant, the Forester's approach angle is an impressive 20 degrees. The Forester Wilderness variant, in turn, goes up to 23.5 degrees.

Departure angle pertains to the steepest slope that a car can descend without making scraping the ground. The Forester's departure angle ranges from 24.6 degrees for most variants up to 25.4 degrees for the Forester Wilderness variant.

Ramp breakover angle refers to the angle of a line drawn from the middle of your car's underside to the ground, tangent to your tires' outer perimeter. In other words, this represents the "pointiest" ramp, peak, or hill that your car can drive over without scraping the ground.

Most 2022 Forester variants have a breakover angle of 19.6 degrees. However, the Wilderness trim has a steeper 21 degrees for better off-road performance.

How Much Can I Fit In The Forester?

The 2022 Subaru Forester has seats for 5 passengers and a total of 111.6 cubic feet of passenger volume. SOA claims that this comfortable interior space is larger than those in other popular compact crossovers like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and the Ford Escape.

However, we should note that the aforementioned total passenger volume applies only to the base trim Forester. All other variants have a total passenger volume of 107.6 cubic feet.

If the rear 60/40 split seats are folded down, then the maximum cargo volume of the base trim Forester is 74.2 cubic feet. All other variants have a maximum cargo volume of 69.1 cubic feet.

If the rear seats are upright, then the cargo volume of the base trim Forester is 28.9 cubic feet. The other variants have a cargo volume of 26.9 cubic feet.

So what do these figures mean?

In terms of cargo space, the Forester is one of the roomiest compact crossovers on the market. Based on an actual luggage test, the Forester's available cargo space is functionally the same as those of its competitors that have larger stated cargo spaces.

On another note, the Forester shines in terms of ease in cargo loading. Because the Forester's maximum rear gate opening width is 51.2 inches, you can load your 50-inch golf bag horizontally even with all the clubs inside. Now that's a breeze!

The American-spec 2022 Subaru Forester houses a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder Subaru Boxer engine. This horizontally-opposed powerplant provides 182 hp at 5,800 rpm and 176 lb-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm.

This engine powers other members of the Subaru stable, like the Outback, Legacy, and Crosstrek.

As with other Subaru models, the Forester uses Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). This internally-developed transmission system transfers the Boxer engine's power to all four wheels, thanks to Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system.

In terms of pulling power, all properly-equipped Forester variants have a 1,500-lb. maximum braked towing capacity.  The Wilderness trim, however, doubles that with a 3,000-lb tow rating.  All variants have a 1,000-lb. limit for unbraked towing.

Is The Subaru Forester Fuel-Efficient?

Based on the fuel economy ratings of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the 2022 Forester is one of the most fuel-efficient AWD crossover SUVs.

All non-Wilderness variants logged 33 miles per gallon (mpg) on the highway and 26 mpg in the city. The combined city/highway rating is 29 mpg.

The Wilderness trim, on the other hand, achieved 28 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg in the city. Its combined rating is 26 mpg.

Why Is The Subaru Forester Popular?

The Subaru Forester is one of America's most popular compact crossover SUVs. In fact, for the past several years, the Forester has been a consistent best-seller, placing 7th or 8th in the said category in terms of unit sales.

Based on J.D. Power's review, the 2022 Forester scored "great" in its consumer scores for resale value as well as quality and reliability.
