Getting the most out of your Nissan Altima

No matter what vehicle you own, you’ll want to be certain you’re following some general guidelines so that you can maximize the number of road miles you can drive it. While this list isn’t all-inclusive, it’s a great start in getting the most out of your Nissan Altima

Maintenance

The key to keeping any vehicle on the road for a long time is how well you maintain it. Regular fluid and filter changes will help take your vehicle a long way. This is especially important with your engine oil. Depending on the type of oil you use, you’ll need it changed every 3,000 to 10,000 miles.

Older model Altimas will use standard motor oil, which you should change at 3,000 miles. But newer models use full synthetic oil, which lasts up to 10,000 miles. Consult your owner’s manual to see which one your Altima requires.

Your Altima will have a service guide with the owner’s manual. Here, you’ll be able to see what should be inspected and when, as well as what fluids and filters need to be changed out at different intervals.

Car Edge provides this schedule for those who cannot locate their own. Follow this closely so that you can exceed the 200,000 mile threshold with your car.

Drive wisely

Be mindful of how you are driving. Lots of rapid acceleration and quick braking is not only hard on your fuel economy, but it will lead to prematurely wearing out some key parts of your Altima.

Tires, brakes, suspension systems, and transmissions can only take so much before they wear out. By driving with some care, you can help make these components last.

Keep it clean

It might sound strange, but keeping your vehicle clean inside and out helps it last longer. Regular washing keeps grime from building up, which can impact your wheels, tires, and suspension systems.

If you live in areas where snow and ice accumulate, you’ll want regular washes on warmer winter days so that you can get the rock salt off of your Altima. This, over time, will cause some issues with deterioration. So be sure to get regular cleanings in the winter when you are able.

A car with a dirty interior can eventually impact infotainment systems, heating and cooling, and other comforts of your ride. Smoking in a vehicle is not only bad for your health, but it damages the electrical systems inside your cab. So it’s best to refrain from puffing at a cigarette when in a car or truck.

Don’t ignore your senses

Should you notice a sound or a smell that isn’t right, it probably isn’t. Vehicles don’t break down in the middle of getting maintained. Rather, the maintenance just prolongs potential issues from arising.

Before parts wear out or break, you might hear it or smell it. Leaky hoses, worn belts or gears, and the like can be heard, smelled, or felt. So use your senses, and if you notice anything out of the norm, get your vehicle in to get checked as soon as possible.

Use quality materials

As with a lot of things, you get what you pay for. Sure, you can save a few bucks on low-cost fluids or parts. But is it worth it? Make sure you are using the best material for your money when it comes to your Altima. Check the consumer ratings on any additive or fluid you are considering using, and be sure that any replacement parts you are getting meet consumer standards.

This model year had numerous transmission problems, most occurring with less than 50,000 road miles. Excessive vibration was also a problem, as was faulty CVT.

Several other model years prior to 2013 had issues related to the CVT. So many issues that a class action lawsuit was approved to go forward in 2010 against the manufacturer.
