Model Lineup

Mercedes offers the GLC-Class of SUV in three different models starting with the GLC 300, GLC 300 4MATIC®, and AMG GLC 43. There is not much to separate the three model options besides the evident upgrade in terms of their drivetrain and engine.

Mercedes offers a lot of customization when it comes to the interior, allowing you to build the GLC SUV to your preference.

GLC 300

The GLC 300 is the entry-level option for the GLC-CLass of SUVs. It has a rear-wheel drivetrain that runs on a 2.0L inline-4 turbo engine that produces 255 hp at 5,800-6,100 rpm and 273 lb-ft of torque at 1,800 rpm.

On the exterior, the GLC 300 has that signature Mercedes-Benz look that you could spot from a mile away. It sports 18-inch split 5-spoke wheels with grey-painted inlays. Lighting-wise, the GLC 300 has LED Daytime Running Lamps, LED headlamps, and LED taillamps for that extra visibility on all types of weather conditions.

When it comes to the cabin, it can't be called a Mercedes if it doesn't emit luxury. The interior accent trimming is made using open-pore wood materials that accentuate the commitment to the luxury experience of driving a Mercedes automobile. The center infotainment console is a 10.25-inch touchscreen display that supports either Apple CarPlay or Andriod Auto.

You won't feel the need to stretch out even after long driving sessions because the synthetic leather seats provide exceptional 4-way lumbar support. Front row seats come standard with heating and power adjustment capabilities.

If someone other than yourself drives the car, Mercedes also added a driver-seat memory feature that can save up to three different seating positions.

Prices for the GLC 300 start at $43,850.

GLC 300 4MATIC®

If you want a GLC 300 with all-wheel drive capabilities, then the GLC 300 4MATIC® is the right one for you. It runs on the same 2.0L engine as the base GLC 300 model.

The drivetrain configuration, however, is an all-wheel-drive system developed by Mercedes. The 4MATIC® is integrated with Mercedes' Electronic Stability Program that provides maximum effectiveness in corners and slippery conditions.

Besides the different drivetrain configuration that is being used, everything else is identical to the base GLC 300 model. The LED lighting all around the vehicle, the signature Mercedes look, and the infotainment features are also the same.

Prices for the GLC 300 4MATIC® start at $45,850.

AMG GLC 43

Mercedes is also offering an AMG-enhanced model of the GLC 300. Named the AMG GLC 43, this SUV packs a lot of punch, even for its midsize frame.

The AMG GLC 43 runs on an AMG-enhanced 3.0L V6 Biturbo engine. That AMG-enhanced engine is capable of producing a whopping 385 hp at 5,500-6,100 rpm and 384 lb-ft of torque at 2,500-5,000 rpm. All that power combined with the 4MATIC® all-wheel drivetrain makes driving in any terrain fun and easy.

Because of the performance-oriented engine that the GLC 43 has, body styling is slightly different. It has that AMG body styling with flared side sills, vertical-bar grille, and aggressive sculpting of the front air dam. For the wheels, the AMG GLC 43 uses 20-inch AMG Y 5-spoke wheels. These wheels add to the appearance and attitude of AMG-powered vehicles.

Interior-wise, the front row seats are now made with MB-Tex and microfiber inserts. Red topstitching and seatbelts accentuate that race car look and feel. The steering wheel, wrapped in Nappa leather, has a flat-bottomed design that offers additional mobility to the driver.

When it comes to infotainment features, the GLC 43 has the same 10.25-inch touchscreen display the other two GLC models have. Its instrument cluster panel, however, is now a 12.3-inch digital cluster that offers customizable features exclusive to AMG-powered vehicles.

Prices for the AMG GLC 43 start at $59,900.

Driving Safety Technology

Mercedes is always known as an innovator and a pioneer in the world of automobile manufacturing. That can also be said with the state-of-the-art driving safety technology they employ in all of their vehicles. You can always guarantee that driving in a Mercedes will be fun, comfortable, and pretty dang safe!

Their GLC-Class of SUVs doesn't skimp out on all that safety technology. All three models, including the AMG model, have about the same amount of standard safety features. This is to show their commitment to high-quality and safe automobiles.

Here's the list of the safety features that the GLC 300, GLC 300 4MATIC®, and AMG GLC 43 have:

Is Mercedes GLC Fuel Efficient?

When it comes to fuel economy, the GLC-Class SUVs have average results. The base GLC 300 and the GLC 300 4MATIC® models both have the same fuel efficiency results. According to the EPA, both models deliver a return of 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. That equates to 4.2 gallons per 100 miles of driving.

The AMG GLC 43, however, returned lower fuel economy ratings because of the AMG-enhanced engine being tuned to more high-performance driving. The GLC 43 will deliver a return of 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. This is to be expected for a car specifically manufactured for high-speed, high-performance driving.

All GLC model options use premium unleaded gasoline as fuel. With each model passing the industry emission standards with the GLC 300 and GLC 300 4MATIC® both having Bin50/ULEV50 emission certifications. While the AMG GLC 43 has a Bin70/ULEV70 emission certification.

Do Mercedes Have A Lot Of Problems?

While it does get a lot of things right, Mercedes-Benz automobiles do have problems that are quite concerning. The recurring problem that many consumers face is the rusting issue on Mercedes-Benz cars. Although every car experiences rusting in one way or another, Mercedes-Benz cars are notorious for developing rust all around the car.

Another common issue with Mercedes cars, specifically the GLC 43, is the transmission. A consumer posted on GLC Forums stated that their GLC 43 is having some weird transmission issues when the oil temperature is above 80 degrees.

Another consumer on the same forum posted an issue where the car would just show battery critical after every driving session, no matter the distance traveled. And when checked with a multimeter, the battery was in normal condition.

And while no car is created perfect, the concerns raised by some unhappy Mercedes owners speak for themselves. For an automaker that produces luxury vehicles with top-of-the-line engines and expensive pricing, this is something they should improve.

Is Mercedes GLC 300 Expensive To Maintain?

If you want the luxury and engine power that a Mercedes can provide, you also have to be prepared for its costly maintenance. Regularly scheduled maintenance is the best approach, especially when owning a Mercedes. Failing to maintain your car can become pretty costly down the line.

According to Car Edge, the cost of maintaining a Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class SUV can go as high as $507 in just the first year alone. Fast forward to 10 years of maintenance, and the costs could reach about $14,421.

Even though this kind of maintenance cost is to be expected for a luxury SUV, Mercedes still beats the average cost for luxury cars by $1,039.

The probability of major repairs in the first year of owning a GLC-Class SUV is 4.40%. That probability reaches 42.69% by the 10th year of owning the vehicle. Compare that to Audi's 10th-year major repair probability percentage of just 30.46%. This is something every potential buyer should consider before committing.

Final Notes

With great luxury and engine power comes great repair costs. The standing of the Mercedes GLC 300 among its peers in the luxury midsize SUV category can be a bit tricky. Although it has that very capable engine and luxurious looks to boast, you can't deny that it has its fair share of issues.

For some, these issues can be a dealbreaker, but for the people that want Mercedes-powered vehicles and that signature look you could spot from a mile away, this won't even be a problem. Drive safe!
