How Much Does A Kia Sportage Weigh?

The Kia Sportage has taken many forms across its five generations since 1993. There is even a new and improved look for the upcoming model year. So, how much does the Kia Sportage weigh with the SUV's new body style for the 2022 model? It isn't easy to find a definitive answer with the multiple trims available with the Sportage. Thankfully, we've researched the trims to give you an answer here in this post.

The 2022 Kia Sportage is available in four trims with different interior and exterior features. However, the total weight of the Sportage mostly depends on the drivetrain choice on each trim. Here are the weight ranges for each drivetrain type:

  • Front-wheel-drive Kia Sportage models have a curb weight of between 3,305 and 3,898 pounds.
  • All-wheel-drive Kia Sportage models have a curb weight of between 3,448 and 3,997 pounds.

As you can see from the basic answer above, the AWD versions of the Kia Sportage are typically heavier. But, there is more that you need to know about the curb weight of the Kia Sportage. Later in this post, we will discuss the specific weight range of each trim and drivetrain combination. Additionally, we will also discuss the functionality and reliability of the Sportage.

Curb Weight of the Kia Sportage

First, the type of weight measurement that we will discuss in this post is called curb weight. Curb weight is the total weight of the vehicle without any additional weight like cargo or passengers. However, the measurement does include vehicle components like fuel and oil.

The Kia Sportage comes in four trims: the LX, the Nightfall Edition, the EX, and the SX Turbo. Here is a breakdown of the curb weight ranges for each of the trims in both FWD and AWD according to the Sportage specs page:

  • LX with FWD - between 3,305 and 3,596 lbs.
  • Nightfall Edition with FWD - between 3,305 and 3,596 lbs.
  • EX with FWD - between 3,305 and 3,596 lbs.
  • SX Turbo with FWD - between 3,666 and 3,898 lbs.
  • LX with AWD - between 3,448 and 3,793 lbs.
  • Nightfall Edition with AWD - between 3,448 and 3,793 lbs.
  • EX with AWD - between 3,448 and 3,793 lbs.
  • SX Turbo with AWD - between 3,765 and 3,997 lbs.

What Affects the Weight of the Kia Sportage?

Some groupings emerge as we examine the complete list of weight ranges of every trim and drivetrain combination. The LX, Nightfall Edition, and EX with front-wheel-drive all have the same weight range of 3,305 to 3,596 pounds. And the same three trims with all-wheel-drive all have the weight range of 3,448 and 3,793.

First, this shows that the SX Turbo in each drivetrain type is significantly heavier than the other three trims. This is because the turbo and all of the associated hardware add weight to the vehicle. The SX Turbo also has larger, 19-inch alloy wheels, whereas the other trims only have 17 or 18-inch wheels.

Second, we can see that the AWD versions of all trims are heavier than the FWD versions. This is because the hardware associated with making all four wheels turn instead of just two is hefty. This extra weight can even have adverse effects on fuel economy. That being said, many people think AWD's safety and control benefits outweigh the negatives, like that slight loss in MPG.

What is the Weight of the 2021 Sportage?

The 2022 Kia Sportage has primarily taken the limelight away from the previous model year. But we thought it was worth it to let you know about the weight of the older version, in case you're interested in a slightly older model year.

According to Edmunds, the curb weight of the 2021 Sportage is 3,305 lbs. This is the same amount as the curb weight of the base model of the 2022 Sportage, showing how similar the vehicles are despite the updated body style.

Is the Kia Sportage a Reliable Car?

A blue Kia Sportage on the parking lot

First, the Kia Sportage is a reliable, high-quality car that auto manufacturers have continuously made for the American market since 1993. There is a lot of evidence of this quality based on praise it received on Kelley Blue Book. The 2022 Sportage has an impressive five stars out of five in the consumer reviews area of the KBB site.

Next, the Kia name carries a lot of good notoriety with it. Since 1992, Kia has sold over eight million vehicles in America. Not only that but Kia has been ranked the number one brand in initial quality for mass-market vehicles for six years in a row, according to J.D. Power. In addition to that recognition, Kia offers an industry-leading warranty that will keep your wallet safe from any unforeseen problems with the Sportage.

What is the Life Expectancy of a Kia Sportage?

The unrivaled, industry-leading warranty proves that the Kia Sportage is built to last a long time. Largely, the Kia warranty is a 10-year or 100,000-mile warranty. The warranty is a great benefit to buying a Kia, but it doesn't cover everything. Other than the powertrain, many other car systems are only under warranty for five years instead of 10. For a full breakdown of the warranty, please visit the Kia warranty page

Although the warranty will run out in all capacities after 100,000 miles, the Sportage may last much longer. There are many reports online of Kias lasting up to 200,000 miles without significant problems.

Is the Kia Sportage Expensive to Maintain?

How much will work on the Kia Sportage cost after that extended warranty finally runs out? And what about immediate needs that are not covered by the warranty? While cost information is not readily available for the 2022 model of the Sportage, there is information from the 2020 model.

According to Edmunds, the five-year cost breakdown of the 2020 Kia Sportage includes an estimated $4,995 in maintenance. This maintenance includes routine upgrades like tires, breaks, and all fluids. The same estimate page predicts a repair fee of $524 in year five, just covering some potential issues that go wrong as cars get older.

While the 2022 model is certainly different than its 2020 ancestor, they are both Sportage models. Because of that fact, we can predict that the maintenance costs will be similar, if not a little lower, due to advancements in technology and quality with the newly updated body style.

Is the Kia Sportage a Good Tow Car?

The Kia Sportage may not be the first thing you think of regarding towing capability as a compact SUV. But on the contrary, the Sportage is perfectly capable of some light towing.

All four of the trims on the Sportage have a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds with trailer brakes and 1,653 pounds without trailer brakes. These towing capacities are the same for both FWD and AWD versions.

That 2,000 pound towing capacity with trailer brakes means that the Kia Sportage can't pull anything too large. But, you should be able to tow small boats, jet skis, motorcycles, small trailers, and even pop-up campers with ease. Of course, if you want to tow something larger, you might want to look into a bigger vehicle with a higher towing capacity. As far as Kias go, to get a vehicle with better towing capabilities, you should look at either the Telluride or the Carnival.

What Size Gas Tank Does the Kia Sportage Have?

One of the more obvious benefits of getting a smaller SUV like the Kia Sportage is better fuel efficiency. But what good is that efficiency without an adequately sized fuel tank? Also, according to the Kia Sportage specs page, all four trims of the compact SUV have a 16.4-gallon fuel tank.

With that 16.4-gallon fuel tank, the Sportage packs a combined 30 MPG city/highway for the FWD models and 26 MPG for the AWD models. For both drivetrain types, the SX Turbo is less fuel-efficient. It gets 28 MPG city/highway combined for the FWD version and 24 MPG for the AWD version.

Overall, the Kia Sportage is a decently fuel-efficient vehicle when you consider its classification as an SUV. If you are interested in something more fuel-efficient, you should check out Kia's sedans

In Closing

The Kia Sportage is a compact SUV weighing between 3,305 and 3,997 pounds depending on which drivetrain and trim options you select. Compact SUVs are beneficial because they offer a sleek body style that is not far from a sedan while providing the space and light towing capability of an SUV. The Sportage will give you these benefits for years to come with its longevity and low cost of maintenance.
