How Much Weight Can A Jeep Gladiator Carry?

The Jeep Gladiator is one of the most versatile and ruggedly designed vehicles in the market. It is Jeep's sole pick-up truck offering and is one of the market's most sought-after midsize trucks. In this post, we will discuss how much weight a Jeep Gladiator can handle and many more features that make this truck so desirable to off-road enthusiasts.

According to Jeep themselves, the all-new 2023 Gladiator has a best-in-class 1,710-lbs payload capacity. This is impressive, considering that it is rated for a 4x4 truck. The claimed payload rating of the Gladiator includes all the passengers and the cargo that you will be putting on its truck bed. All of its models are in a crew cab configuration.

How Much Weight Can You Put In A Jeep Gladiator?

The Jeep Gladiator is no ordinary truck. The Gladiator is the truck version of the Jeep Wrangler, making it a more off-road-focused vehicle rather than a work vehicle like most traditional trucks.

With that said, it only becomes more impressive that the Gladiator is rated as the best-in-class 4x4 when it comes to hauling capabilities. The Jeep Gladiator is rated at an outstanding 1,710-lbs weight capacity, besting other midsize 4x4 trucks like the Ford Ranger and Chey Colorado.

To be clear, while the Gladiator has the highest tow rating for 4x4 midsize trucks, it isn't the best in the entire class, as 4x2 trucks will always have a better tow and haul rating due to their lesser axle and transfer case.

Impressively though, the Gladiator is only 200lbs short of the overall best-in-class haul rating, a 4x2 Supercab Ford Ranger at 1,900 lbs

This truck was also built with off-roading in mind. Unlike its competitors, the Ranger and Colorado, which are both more commonly used as work or commute vehicles and not for recreational use.

Although you can use them for this purpose, buyers often opt for other models of these competitors' trucks for off-road use. As a matter of fact, for the Ranger, you would have to go with a Raptor, Ford's line of off-road pick-up trucks, to get the best off-road option.

Drawbacks of 4x4

Its off-road focus doesn't mean you cannot use the Jeep Gladiator as a work truck. Aside from the impressive weight capacity, it also boasts its 7,700-lbs of towing, another best for gasoline engines in its class. However, you might have problems with its maintenance and fuel economy over time.

This statement is true for all 4x4 vehicles. When it comes to a work vehicle, choosing a 4x2 drivetrain would always be better than a 4x4 as they require less maintenance, have better fuel economy, and simply last longer.

4x2 vehicles are also cheaper compared to a 4x4, but this would ultimately boil down to your needs and how well you maintain your vehicle. These issues are still under real-world testing, and projected data could be different on paper than it is on the road.

Which Gladiator has the best payload?

All models will have similar towing, hauling, and weight capacity for the Gladiator trim line-up. This means that the 1,700-lb weight limit is the same from the base trim Gladiator Sport all the way to the Gladiator freedom. More on this in the later section.

Hauling with the Jeep Gladiator (and towing)

As a reminder, when hauling with your Gladiator, it is still best to leave an allowance of a few hundred pounds to avoid reaching the limit of the vehicle.

Although it is rated at more than 1,700 lbs, carrying near or exactly to the limit would be bad for the vehicle, especially if you do it all the time. You could strain the engine if you keep pushing it, which could result in the car overheating. This is also a traffic violation in the majority of places. Most of the time, you can get a traffic ticket for overloading.

This is due to the existing anti-overloading laws. Although it varies in interpretation per state, overloaded vehicles are easy to spot and could be flagged down by officers on the highway. Overloaded vehicles not only pose a threat not to other motorists, but to themselves as well.

To avoid this, it is best to weigh the load that you will be carrying. If you do not have a proper weighing scale, one of the quickest indicators that you are overloaded is truck squatting. This is when the front of your vehicle rises and the back sinks due to the cargo weight being carried. You can also see this in trucks towing loads that are over their tow limits.

How Long Do Jeep Vehicles Last?

The data seems to favor most Jeep owners. Jeep vehicles have an estimated lifespan of around 200,000 to 300,000 miles before any major repairs are required. This assumes that no major accidents happen, which could affect the engine's overall performance.

With the numbers above, if the Jeep owner drives an annual mile of 13,000 to 15,000 miles per year, then the Jeep would have an estimated 13-20 years of service life.

However, proper car use and maintenance are necessary if you even want to reach a hundred thousand miles. Driving habits are also often overlooked when it comes to how long a vehicle can last.

Addressing any issues and problems immediately will also help prevent undamaged parts from being affected. It is also best to have your car taken care of by trusted mechanics who knows what they are doing. Avoid cutting costs out on parts replacements, especially if it's an important moving part like joints and suspensions.

With Jeeps, mods and customizations are very common, especially since its main market is geared towards hobbyists with their line-ups of the Wrangler and Gladiator. Making sure that the upgrades you will be placing are all compatible and safe will help maintain the car.

Of course, regular maintenance is also needed, like engine oil change, brake calipers replacement, transmission fluid maintenance, brake fluid maintenance, etc. These should all be done at the proper scheduled time.

How well do Jeep Gladiators hold up in value?

You can expect a depreciation of 22% in the first five years from purchase. Assuming you bought the Gladiator at a price of $53,320 when new, you can still resell it at the best price of around $41,446.

Other variables would have to be considered, such as the repair history of the vehicle, cosmetic issues, legal history, and mileage. In model years with recalls like the 2018-2021 models, you will have to disclose if the unit was part of the defective batch and if the issues were fixed. This might also affect the final appraisal value of the vehicle.

In review

The Gladiator is a class leader when it comes to total payload capacity, but it is worth remembering that payload also includes the passengers and truck driver, not just its cargo. Learning and following the weight limit set by the manufacturer for the Gladiator is imperative to avoid damage to its engine and the vehicle overall.

Although primarily designed as an off-road vehicle, you can use the Gladiator as a work truck because of its towing and payload capacity, but its primary strength and designs are intended to be used for adventures on unpaved roads. The Gladiator is a very robust vehicle, and it can surely last you for miles and miles if you take care of it regularly.
