When practicality is among your priorities when looking for a family vehicle, not a lot of vehicles can beat minivans like the Honda Odyssey. With the Odyssey's large cabin, it can seat your loved ones as well as carry quite a lot of luggage. So how much weight can a Honda Odyssey carry? Here's what our research uncovered.
The current-generation Honda Odyssey's payload rating varies slightly according to its seating configuration.
- For trims with 2nd-row center seats, the Honda Odyssey can carry up to 1,340 pounds.
- For trims without 2nd-row center seats, the Honda Odyssey can carry up to 1,173 pounds.
Would you like to know more about the Honda Odyssey's payload capacity? Do read on, because we've also included some of the Odyssey's impressive specifications and convenient features.
How Much Weight A Honda Odyssey Can Carry
With a sales volume representing a market share of 20-30% of the minivan segment, the Honda Odyssey is one of the best-selling multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) in America. Among its best appeals is its spacious interior for both passengers and cargo.
When traveling in a large group, Odyssey owners should take into account both passenger weights and cargo weights to ensure that the total load is within the vehicle's capacity. So how much weight can a Honda Odyssey carry in total?
Although Honda USA's website does not provide a specific payload capacity specification for the Odyssey, we can get the numbers from the vehicle's owner's manual.
- Odyssey trims without the 2nd-row center seat can carry up to 1,173 pounds (532 kg).
- Trims that have the 2nd-row center seat have a maximum load of 1,340 pounds (608 kg).
The maximum load limit refers to the combined weight of all the passengers, cargo, and non-standard accessories that you may put on the Odyssey. Additionally, the limit also includes tongue weight if ever you decide to tow a trailer.
As we have learned from the manual, the 2nd-row center seat is the main factor in the payload capacity variances of different Odyssey trims. So what is this seat exactly? Check out this video to learn more about the Odyssey's multifunction 2nd-row center seat:
Honda Odyssey Seating Capacity
All current-generation Honda Odyssey trims in the U.S. have a maximum seating capacity of eight people. However, with the multifunction 2nd-row center seat removed, you can give your 2nd-row passengers a bit more comfortable room in their Magic Slide Seats.
With the center seat removed, the Odyssey's 2nd-row outboard Magic seats can slide forward, backward, left, and right. This adjustability gives Odyssey owners and passengers a lot of freedom in seating arrangements and cargo carrying.

How Big Is The Cargo Space In Honda Odyssey?
In terms of total cargo space, the Honda Odyssey is one of the best in the minivan segment.
- Cargo volume behind 3rd row
- 32.8 cubic feet (standard 3rd-row seat position) for all trims
- 38.6 cubic feet (3rd-row seats in their forward-most and upright position) for all trims
- Behind 2nd row
- 89.2 cubic feet for EX trim and 86.6 cubic feet for all other trims (standard 2nd-row seat position)
- 92.3 cubic feet for EX trim and 91 cubic feet for all other trims (2nd-row seats in their forward-most and upright position)
- Behind 1st row
- 144.9 cubic feet for EX trim and 140.7 cubic feet for all other trims (standard 1st-row seat position)
- 158 cubic feet for EX trim and 155.8 cubic feet for all other trims (1st-row seats in the forward-most and upright position)
How Strong Is The Honda Odyssey?
To haul eight people plus some cargo to boot, a minivan has to have a robust powerplant. Fortunately, the Honda Odyssey does not fall short in this aspect.
For all of its available trims, the Honda Odyssey uses a 3.5-liter, 24-valve direct-injection i-VTEC V6 engine with the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system. This mill produces 280 hp and 262 lb.-ft. of torque, which is more than enough to propel the Odyssey's gross weight comfortably.
Unfortunately, the Odyssey engine's power can only transfer to the vehicle's two front wheels. If you're looking for an all-wheel-drive minivan, then this Honda MPV may not be for you.
How Much Weight Can A Honda Odyssey Pull?
In terms of towing capacity, the Honda Odyssey is no slouch. When properly equipped, all Odyssey trims have a braked towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. This is enough to tow pop-up campers, teardrop trailers, small boat trailers, and even some lightweight travel trailers.
However, do take note that the Odyssey's towing capacity depends greatly on the number of passengers. Below is a helpful guide showing the Odyssey's towing capacity vis-a-vis the number of its occupants or passengers.
Each occupant has an assumed weight of 150 pounds (68 kg). Moreover, each passenger is assumed to be carrying a 17.6-pound (8 kg) piece of cargo.
- 2 occupants - 3,500 pounds
- 3 occupants - 3,350 pounds
- 4 occupants - 3,150 pounds
- 5 occupants - 3,000 pounds
- 6 occupants - 2,000 pounds
- 7 occupants - 800 pounds
- 8 occupants - towing is not recommended
As we can see from the guide above, Honda does not recommend doing any towing activity when all of your Odyssey's seats are occupied.
As a final note, minivans like the Odyssey may be one of the most practical choices for transporting people, but these vehicles are not meant for regular heavy towing. Check out this video to understand what and how you can tow with the Odyssey:
Honda Odyssey Dimensions 2022
As a minivan, the Honda Odyssey is understandably larger than most cars and crossovers. Here are the pertinent dimensions of the current-generation Odyssey.
Honda Odyssey Length
A vehicle's overall length refers to the distance from the farthest point in front to the farthest point at the back. The Odyssey's overall length is 205.2 inches or 5,212.08 mm.
Wheelbase length, on the other hand, is the distance between the center hubs of the front and rear wheels on the same vehicle side. Longer wheelbases usually provide a more comfortable ride and larger cabin space. The Odyssey's wheelbase length is 118.1 inches or 2,999.74 mm for all trims.
Honda Odyssey Width
Overall width is measured at the widest point of a vehicle, excluding its side mirrors and flexible mud flaps, if equipped. The Honda Odyssey's overall width is 78.5 inches or 1,993.9 mm for all trim levels.
Track width, on the other hand, is the distance between the centers of the contact patches of a vehicle's tires. The Odyssey's front track width is 67.3 inches (1,709.42 mm) while its rear track width is 67.2 inches (1,706.88 mm).
Honda Odyssey Height
Overall height is the distance from flat level ground to a vehicle's highest point, excluding roof rails, antennae, or other accessories. This measurement should only be taken with properly inflated tires and while the vehicle has neither passengers nor cargo.
The Honda Odyssey's overall height is 69.6 inches (1,767.84 mm) for all trim levels.
Ground clearance, on the other hand, is the distance from flat level ground to the vehicle's lowest point aside from the wheels and tires. Similar to overall height, ground clearance should be measured while the vehicle has no cargo or passengers and while the tires are properly inflated.
As a more practical definition, ground clearance is the height of the tallest road obstacle that a vehicle can drive over without scraping the underside. All Honda Odyssey trims have a ground clearance of 4.5 inches (114.3 mm).
Are Honda Odysseys Good On Gas?
Although the Honda Odyssey may not be the segment leader in terms of fuel economy, it is far from being a gas guzzler. Despite its 280-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine and its relatively large body size, the 2023 Odyssey still manages to get an EPA combined fuel economy rating of 22 miles per gallon.
The Odyssey's EPA fuel economy rating is at par with all other gasoline-powered, non-hybrid minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica and the Kia Carnival.
Does The 2022 Honda Odyssey Have Push Button Start?
The last U.S.-spec Odyssey with a mechanical key ignition rolled out of the dealership in 2017. If you're looking to upgrade to a new MPV or minivan for your family, then perhaps the 2022 Odyssey is for you!
All the current U.S. trims of the Honda Odyssey have push-button ignition systems. You'll never have to worry about getting your key stuck in the ignition again.
What Is The Safety Rating Of The Honda Odyssey?
When it comes to passenger comfort and safety, we naturally expect minivans to deliver very well. After all, people often choose minivans when they just started their family and have babies or toddlers to take care of.
In terms of safety ratings, the Honda Odyssey is quite impressive.
The 2022 Odyssey achieved a 5-out-of-5 overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). On another note, the Odyssey also received the Top Safety Pick Plus (+) award for 2022 from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
