Special Operating Conditions refer to driving activities that demand more output from the engine. These activities produce more engine heat and friction, therefore decreasing the engine oil's usable life. Some of these driving conditions include:
- Trailer towing or carrying a car-top carrier (e.g. in motorhomes)
- Maximizing vehicle payload capacity
- Extensive idling
- Low-speed or start/stop driving over long distances
- Driving in dusty environments
- Off-roading
- Hard launching and prolonged high engine RPMs (e.g. when racing)
If you operate your 2007 or older Ford V10 under these conditions frequently or regularly, then you will need to change your engine oil more frequently as well. Ford's recommends that you do so every three months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Ford V10 From 2008 Onwards
For 2008 and later models, Ford owner's manuals recommend longer oil change intervals. Under the Normal schedule, Ford recommends your oil be changed every six months or 7,500 miles, whichever comes first.
On the other hand, vehicles that operate under more demanding conditions need an oil change every or 5,000 miles. The six-month recommendation remains unchanged even for special operating conditions.
What Is Ford Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor?
Newer Ford vehicles have Ford's Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor (IOLM). The IOLM is an advanced electronic feature that calculates your engine oil's remaining usable life. To do this function, IOLM uses several of your Ford's existing systems to take into account the following factors:
- Actual engine operation data
- Ambient temperature during drives
- Heavy or light traffic conditions
- Demanding activities like towing and off-roading
- Your driving habits
- Date of last oil change

When Will The Oil Life Monitor Alert Me?
Unlike the preset oil change intervals in the owner's manual, the IOLM may give you a shorter or longer interval based on your actual engine oil's usable life. The IOLM may give you an oil change reminder close to the following driving ranges.
- For normal combined city and highway driving - between 7,500 and 10,000 miles
- When doing moderate trailering, off-road driving, or extended idling - between 5,000 and 7,500 miles
- For extreme driving conditions like in heavy traffic, heavy trailering, and extreme ambient temperatures - between 3,000 and 5,000 miles.
IOLM will give out an alert on the driver's instrument cluster when:
- Your oil's remaining life drops down to 5% - this is the time for you to plan your oil change. You may contact your dealership or prepare to change your oil on your own.
- Your oil is due for changing - this alert shows up when your oil's usable life hits 0%. For your engine's proper protection, you should change your oil immediately.
Finally, IOLM will alert you a year after your last oil change, regardless of the miles that you have racked up in your Ford.
What Oil Is Recommended For The Ford V10 Engine?
Ford recommends two oil types for their V10 engine. Older models (1997 up to 2000) typically take 5W-30, but newer engines (2000 and newer) take 5W-20.
Although most Ford V10 models' manuals in the U.S. will recommend the 5w-20 oil, you may also want to consult your dealer regarding the best oil depending on your location.

How Do You Change The Oil On A Ford V10?

Ford V10 Oil Change Parts And Tools
To perform an oil change for your Ford V10 engine, you will need the following tools and parts:
- 16-mm wrench or socket and ratchet set
- Oil filter remover tool/ oil filter wrench
- Oil funnel
- 8-quart or bigger drain pan
- Clean vehicle rags or towels
- Protective gloves
- 7 quarts (6.6 liters) of 5w-20 or 5w-30 Motorcraft engine oil

Ford V10 Oil Change Procedure
- Park the Ford V10 vehicle on level ground.
- If the weather is very cold, you may need to run the engine for a few minutes. This will warm up the oil and allow it to flow better when you drain it.
- Wear your protective gloves.
- Make sure that the engine is off before starting the oil change.
- Twist and remove the engine oil fill cap.
- Get under the engine bay and locate the engine oil drain plug.
- Position the drain pan on the ground underneath the drain plug.
- Position the funnel directly underneath the drain plug to catch the oil and direct it to the drain pan. Ford V10 engine drain plugs are often located above a metal crossbar and the funnel will prevent the dirty oil from splashing on the bar.
- Loosen and remove the engine oil drain plug using the 16-mm wrench.
- Let the used oil flow into the funnel and down to the drain pan.
- After the oil drains completely from the engine block, return and retighten the oil drain plug.
- Loosen and remove the engine oil filter with the oil filter wrench.
- Use a little of the new engine oil to lubricate the oil filter's rubber O-ring.
- Twist and tighten the new oil filter to the engine block.
- Go back to the top of the engine bay and pour in 6.5 quarts of the new engine oil through the oil fill port. You may need a clean funnel to prevent oil spillage.
- Replace and tighten the engine's oil fill cap.
- Run the engine for a few minutes to let the new oil circulate.
- Turn off the engine and check for any leaks.
- Check the oil level using the engine oil dipstick. Add more fresh engine oil as needed.
