How Tall Is A Chevy Silverado? [Will It Fit In My Garage?]

Finding out whether or not your new pickup truck will fit into your garage should be something you do before signing any paperwork. Though modern garages will accommodate most vehicles, there are some exceptions to be wary of. Should you be considering a Chevy Silverado and wonder how tall this truck is, we can help you. We researched this popular pickup truck from multiple professional sources so that you'll know for sure how tall it is and if it will fit into your garage.

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 ranges from 75.5 inches tall to 78.7 inches tall. The Silverado 2500 ranges from 79.65 to 80.94. The 3500 ranges from 80.67 to 80.94. These will fit into most home garages, depending on how the garage is constructed.

Now that we know the different height ranges of the Chevy Silverado across all three classes, we'll take a look at how much room it will take up in a typical home garage. You might also be wondering if a full-sized truck will fit into your garage or how much ground clearance a Chevy Silverado has. For the answers to these questions and more, read ahead in this post to see what our research has uncovered.

Comparing the measurements of the Silverado to the standard home garage

Trucks come in all shapes and sizes, and some models might not fit into your home's garage. Thankfully, garages are built to a standard size, which helps take a lot of the guesswork out of determining whether or not the model you have measurements for will safely fit.

The standard home garage has a depth of 20 feet, which is more than large enough for most passenger trucks to tuck inside of. The width will be 12 feet, with a garage door opening of at least 9 feet. Ideally, you want to have a minimum of two-and-a-half feet clearance on either side of a parked vehicle so that the driver and passengers can safely and comfortably exit.

The standard minimum garage height is seven feet or 84 inches. This can make the Silverado a tight fit and impossible if the antenna isn't retracted [if able]. It's recommended to have a garage that is eight feet tall [another standard dimension] if you plan to park a Silverado inside it.

Will a full-sized truck fit into my garage?

Whether or not your full-sized truck will fit into your garage will depend on the dimensions of that garage. The model of full-sized truck you want to park there will also be an important factor. The measurements of full-sized trucks will vary from model to model and year to year across any particular model.

The following are the measurement ranges for several of the most popular full-size pickup trucks. The range is based on different trim levels, cab configurations, and other items that will cause the dimensions to vary.

Ford F150

  • Length: 234 inches to 257 inches
  • Height: 75 inches to 85 inches
  • Width:  75 inches to 82 inches

Chevy Silverado

  • Length: 229 inches to 248 inches
  • Height: 70 inches to 80 inches
  • Width: 70 inches to 75 inches

Dodge Ram

  • Length: 235 inches to 260 inches
  • Height: 75 inches to 80 inches
  • Width: 75 inches to 80 inches

Toyota Tundra

  • Length: 225 inches to 256 inches
  • Height: 65 inches to 80 inches
  • Width: 65 inches to 72 inches

GMC Sierra

  • Length: 221 inches to 239 inches
  • Height: 75 inches to 85 inches
  • Width: 75 inches to 80 inches

Compare the above with the standard single car garage dimensions. Earlier in this post, we listed them at 20 feet deep [240 inches] by 12 feet wide [144 inches] by seven to eight feet tall [84 inches to 96 inches]. Keep in mind that you'll want at least two-and-a-half feet [30 inches apiece] on either side of the vehicle for ease of entry and exit.

What is the standard height of a parking garage?

You won't always be able to park your vehicle in your garage or out on a public street. Urban areas have sparse street parking available, forcing many of us to park our cars, trucks, and SUVs inside large parking garages. Like home garages, these can be a bit restrictive for larger vehicles.

The standard minimum height for a parking garage is seven feet [84 inches]. While this will accommodate most vehicles, it can be a little too close for others. SUVs with roof racks can run into problems, so be sure to keep the dimensions of any cargo in mind. Not doing so can damage both the cargo and your vehicle.

Many more modern parking garages are built with an eight-foot height clearance, making parking the largest passenger trucks inside of them much easier. But before you pull into any parking structure, know your vehicle's height. And pay close attention to the posted clearance of the structure you're about to pull into.

How much ground clearance does a Chevy Silverado have?

A vehicle's ground clearance is the distance between the lowest part of the vehicle's frame to the ground below. Also known as ride clearance, it's a measurement taken when the vehicle is empty of any passengers or cargo as this weight will cause the vehicle to sit a bit lower.

The Chevy Silverado has a ground clearance that ranges from 7.8 to 10.9 inches. The trim levels meant for going off-road should have a minimum ground clearance of eight-and-a-half inches, which covers most offered by the Silverado.

The amount of ground clearance for a pickup truck will generally affect how tall the pickup truck stands. The higher the vehicle's ground is, the more clearance will be required to safely fit the vehicle inside of a home garage or parking garage.

What is the tallest pickup truck?

The tallest pickup truck in production is the Brabus Unimog U500 Black Edition. It sits at an impressive 9.7 feet [116.4 inches] tall. Too tall to fit inside a standard home garage, this vehicle is probably best left in a lot or a carport with a higher clearance.

But if you're looking for a more widely available pickup truck for the sake of generous ground clearance, there are plenty to choose from. The Dodge Ram 2500 Power Wagon has the largest ground clearance of available models, at 14.2 inches. The Ford F-150 Raptor is a close second, measuring an impressive 13.1 inches from the ground to the frame. The Dodge Ram 1500 TRX comes in third, noticeably lower at only 11.8 inches.

As we mentioned earlier in this post, taller pickup trucks will be a tight fit into a garage that only has a seven-foot height. Be mindful of the exact dimensions of your prospective vehicle and the area you will be parking it in. Should you have a garage that is eight feet tall, most of the larger model pickup trucks will be able to be parked inside of them without any worry of exceeding the space's clearance.
