How Do Heated Steering Wheel and Heated Seats Work?

Heated seats and a heated steering wheel is a luxury feature that often comes equipped in high-end vehicles. Some may think that it is unnecessary to spend the extra money for this option, but once they have a vehicle with these features, they will realize what they have missed. But how do heated seats and heating steering wheel work? Is it some sort of magic?

Unfortunately, it's not the result of magic, but that would be cool!

Heated seats and heated steering wheels result from ingenious engineering powered by a long strip of material that functions as a heating element. When powered on, the electricity flows through the long strip, turning the energy into heat that warms the seat and steering wheel. Heated seats and heated steering wheels work the same as heated blankets, hairdryers, and anything else that produces heat from electricity.

The Hyundai Palisade Trim Packages And Their Interior Features

The 2021 Hyundai Palisade comes in four trim packages SE, SEL, Limited, and the new Calligraphy. These packages come with various interior comfort features and have a starting MSRP ranging from $32,675 to $46,200. Deciding which Palisade package to go with will depend on you and your family's needs and wants. Let's break down the differences in each of these packages.

Hyundai Palisade SE

The Hyundai Palisade SE is the base model and the least expensive choice of the four packages, with a starting MSRP of $32,675. When it comes to features and comfort, it doesn't have that "wow" factor. For the minimalist, this is an excellent choice for full-size SUVs.

It doesn't have heated seats, heating steering wheel, ventilated seats, or cooled seats, but it still comes with some excellent interior technology and safety features. The SE comes interior comes standard with the following technology:

  • 8-inch touch screen
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Bluetooth
  • Five USB ports
  • HD Radio
  • Cloth upholstery
  • Manually adjustable driver's seat
  • Second- and third-row bench seats (eight-seat layout)

The SE is the stripped-down package compared to the other three trim packages, but it still has some amazing safety features. These are the safety features that come standard in the Hyundai Palisade SE:

  • Rearview camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keep assist
  • LED headlights
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Driver drowsiness monitoring
  • Rear-seat alert

Not bad for being the base model! However, if the standard interior features aren't enough in the SE, it is worth looking at the following three packages.

Hyundai Palisade SEL

The next tier of trim packages is the Hyundai Palisade SEL. The SEL is a happy medium out of the four packages for interior, exterior, price, and safety features. Here is the list of extra interior features in the SEL package:

  • Proximity keyless entry
  • Push-button start
  • Remote start
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated front seats
  • Power-adjustable driver's seat
  • Available in second-row bench seats or captains chairs
  • Sunroof

That's quite a few extra interior features for only $3,000 more than the SE! In addition to these interior features, the Hyundai Palisade SEL comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The SEL can be purchased in two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive for an extra $1,700.

Hyundai Palisade Limited

Going up in luxury and price is the Hyundai Palisade Limited. The Palisade Limited trim starts at $45,125 for front-wheel-drive models and $46,825 for all-wheel-drive models. This trim gains all of the interior features of the Convenience and Premium packages, in addition to NAPPA leather seats, heads-up display, ventilated first- and second-row seats, heated steering wheel, heated first and second-row seats, ambient interior lighting, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, and a panoramic sunroof.

Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy

Last but not least, we present the Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy. Starting at $47,750, the Calligraphy is the Hyundai Palisades newest trim package making its debut in 2021. Minus the quilted leather door panels, the interior features on the Calligraphy are virtually the same as the Limited package.

So, what is the difference between Calligraphy and the Limited?

The main difference between the two luxury packages is mainly on the exterior. Here are the added standard features on the new Calligraphy package:

  • The Calligraphy package is offered exclusively in all-wheel-drive.
  • It has special lighting on the exterior of the vehicle for easy entry.
  • It features a new "Calligraphy" front grille.
  • 20inch premium Calligraphy-exclusive alloy wheels.

What is the difference between Hyundai Palisade SEL and Limited?

The SEL has numerous features and is $10,000 less than the Limited. Why such a big price difference? As we discussed, the Limited comes standard with nearly every feature exterior and interior feature you can think of. The interior gains an edge compared to the SEL because of its front row and second-row heated seats, heated steering wheel, and not mention its front and second-row ventilated seats. Whereas the SEL only has heated seats in the front row. If you frequently take long road trips with the family, these additional features might be worth the step up in price.

Does the Hyundai Palisade have cooled seats?

Unfortunately, unlike other luxury full-size SUVs on the market, none of the Hyundai Palisade trim packages come with cooled seats. However, the Limited and Calligraphy packages do come standard with first and second-row ventilated seats.

What's the difference between cooled and ventilated seats?

Cooled seats blow air over a cooled surface that then ventilates through the seats. Ventilated seats work by blowing air into chambers to increase the airflow within the vehicle. Ventilated seats don't exactly have a cooling effect and work similarly to a bedroom or ceiling fan. While ventilated seats might be enough for some, others who live in regions where it's hot year-round may want to look at other SUVs that have cooled seats, such as the Chevy Tahoe.

Which Hyundai Palisade Has Captain's Chairs?

If you want the convenience of third-row access, then captain chairs are the way to go. The Hyundai Palisade has captain chairs in the SEL, Limited, and Calligraphy package. The SEL is the only package that has the option of switching to a bench seat at no additional cost.

What is included in the Hyundai Palisade Premium Package?

The Limited and Calligraphy packages come with so many interior and exterior features, but with that comes a hefty price tag. That's where the Premium Package comes in. Only available on the SEL, consumers can add the Premium Package for an additional $3,100.

Not only does this still make it around $7,000 cheaper than the Limited, but it adds the following features:

  • Heated steering wheel
  • Heated 2nd-row seats
  • Leather seating surfaces
  • Premium dashboard/door armrests
  • 8-Way power passenger seat
  • Driver's seat integrated memory system (IMS)
  • Power folding/unfolding/reclining 3rd-row seating
  • Navigation with 10.25" touchscreen
  • Highway drive assist
  • SiriusXM, Blue Link Connected Car
  • Driver Talk (in-car intercom)

That's a pretty incredible value!

  1. We have the high end 2022 Palisade. My question is can you turn the “butt” part of the heated seats off and leave the back going. I have a bad back and it acts like a heating pad, but the toosh gets a little too warm for my liking, lol. We had a Denali, and you could just push the first of the 2 lights on the seat icon and it turned off the butt, but the back stayed on. I haven’t been able to figure this out. Any help would be appreciated!

    Thank you!
