Rivian Size vs F-150 – How Do They Compare?

With so many varieties of pickup trucks available, it can be a bit overwhelming to know which one is the right size for your needs. If you are needing to compare the new Rivian truck to the Ford F-150, we can help you. We researched both of these vehicles in depth so you'll know how they stack up against each other.

The Rivian R1T truck is a bit larger than the base model Ford F-150 when comparing the 2022 model year. The exterior dimensions of each pickup truck are:

  • The Rivian's height is 77.3 inches.
  • The Rivian's width is 81.8 inches.
  • The Rivian's length is 217.11 inches.
  • The Rivian's wheelbase is 136 inches.
  • The Ford F-150's height is 75.6 inches.
  • The Ford F-150's width is 79.9 inches.
  • The Ford F-150's length is 209.1 inches.
  • The Ford F-150's wheelbase is 122.8 inches.

The cab and bed styles along with the trim level selected for the Ford F-150 will impact the overall size of the vehicle. While the Rivian R1T is larger than the Ford F-150 XL Regular Cab, there are configurations of this pickup that will make its size bigger than the Rivan.

Now that we have a general idea of how the Rivian and Ford F-150 compare on size, we'll take a look at how the trim levels of the Ford F-150 might impact that comparison. You might also want to know if the Rivian is considered a full-size truck or what the wait time is for a Rivian. How The Ford F-150 Trim Levels And Configurations Affect Its Overall Size

Earlier in this post, we covered the base model Ford F-150 and its external dimension. Clearly, this model truck is smaller than the Rivian. But if you take a quick look at what other cab configurations and trim levels offer, you'll find that some versions of the Ford F-150 are larger.

We began our comparison to the Rivian with the 6.5-foot bed of the Ford F-150 XL. But if you compare the same trim level with an 8.0-foot bed, the size increases dramatically.

With this bed length, the wheelbase rises to 141.5 inches, while the length and height increase to 227.7 inches and 77.0 inches, respectively. The width stays the same.

These measurements place the 8-foot bed version of the Ford F-150 noticeably bigger than the Rivan truck.

Is The Rivian Considered A Full-Size Truck?

When it comes to defining the class of truck, industry leaders use the vehicle's gross vehicle weight (GVW). This is the total of the truck's curb weight plus its maximum payload. For those needing a refresher on payload, it is the maximum amount a vehicle can carry, including all passengers, cargo, and fuel.

For a pickup truck to be considered full-size, it must have a GVW rating of between 6,000 and 8,500 pounds. We know that the Rivian is larger than the base model Ford F-150 full-size pickup truck. But is it in the same class?

With a GVW of 8,532 pounds, the Rivian is still considered a Class 2 truck. But being over the 8,500-pound mark puts it at Class 2b, whereas the Ford F-150 sits at Class 2a.

What Is The Wait Time For A Rivian?

Supply chain issues have created longer-than-normal wait times for newer vehicles. The Rivian is no exception to this. The components needed to construct this all-electric truck are taking longer to get than normal, delaying delivery to anxious consumers.

Reports vary on just how long it takes for a Rivian to get delivered to you after you order it. Worst case scenario spells out three months, though there have been some instances where the wait has been longer.

There are some ways to get this wait time cut into less than half, however. But be aware that this typically means doing without some of the upgrade options that you initially ordered when you made your purchase.

If losing some of those is okay, then it might be worth it to contact your dealer and see if this will speed up the delivery process.

Can A Rivian Use A Tesla Charger?

Experts report that Tesla uses a charger specific to the vehicles that they manufacture. While this would mean that you can't just plug your Rivian into a Tesla-brand charger, it doesn't necessarily mean that all hope is lost.

With a proper adapter, you can use the Tesla charger to get your Rivian battery juiced and ready to drive.

The manufacturers of both Tesla and Rivian advise against this practice, however. There is a risk of damage that can be done to a vehicle that isn't using the proper charger, even with an adapter.

A charging adapter for the Rivian might do in a pinch, but remember that any harm done to your Rivian by using a Tesla charger will likely void any warranty.

How Much Does It Cost To Charge A Rivian?

You might have heard that charging an all-electric vehicle cost quite a bit less than filling up the tank of a gas-powered car or truck. With today's gas prices at the levels they are at, this is truer than ever before.

When charging a Rivan, you can expect to pay less than $20 to get a full charge. On average, the cost of a full charge runs $17.66. This is not bad when you consider that a 16-gallon gas tank will cost $64 when fuel is $4 per gallon.

If you're charging your Rivian at home, expect your electric bill to increase. But overall, you'll still be spending less out of your household budget.

How Do You Charge A Rivian At Home?

You don't need to rely on finding a Rivian charging station to top off your truck's battery. There is a great and inexpensive way to get your Rivian's battery back to full in your driveway or garage.

Rivan makes a wall charger specifically for home use. It's weather-proofed, so it can be used indoors or outside. While not near as fast as a supercharger, it will give your battery approximately 25 miles of additional charge for every hour it is plugged in.

These chargers come with a five-year warranty and are durable and dependable. They also have Wi-Fi connectivity so they can receive software updates as needed. Keep this charger handy at home, and consider investing in a spare to take with you on the road just in case you need it.

How Long Will A Rivian Last?

With the price a consumer pays for an all-electric vehicle, there should be some assurance that their investment will last a long time. These types of vehicles have minimal maintenance, especially when compared to the ones on the road that are powered by combustion engines.

Prospective Rivian owners might be relieved to know that a Rivian R1T comes with a factory warranty that covers its battery for a full eight years or 175,000 miles, whichever comes first.

While this technology is still new and hard to determine the exact life expectancy, it's believed that many of the all-electric vehicles you see on the road today will still be in operation more than 20 years from now.

Considering that Tesla vehicles are expected to last between 300,000 and 500,000 miles, it's probably right to think that all-electric vehicles are longer-lasting than gas-powered ones. With so little that can go wrong with them, this might be an accurate prediction.

Final Thoughts

The Rivian truck is a great and reliable all-electric vehicle and is larger than many of the model configurations of the Ford F-150.

Having a charger adapter handy will help you find charging stations easier so that you can use a Tesla charger when you have no other options. Keep your Rivian charged at home by purchasing a separate wall charger to charge a nearly dead Rivian battery while you sleep. Drive safe!
