How Big Is A Ford Transit Van?

Ford's Transit model van is one of the leading cargo and passenger vans on the market. The Ford Transit is spacious, well-equipped, and affordable. The issue with the Transit is that there are so many styles and size options that finding out how big one really is can be impossible. So, we have researched all trims and size options for the 2021 Ford Transit and have the size specifications for you here in this post.

There are 18 potential size combinations for the 2021 Ford Transit. Of the three types, Cargo, Crew, and Passenger, two factors determine the overall size of the Transit: the length choice and the roof height choice. Exterior Size of the Ford Transit Van

Several factors determine the size of the Ford Transit Van. Each of these factors changes the overall size, but they don't exactly operate as rules. Each of the combinations of features can result in slightly different total size measurements. Consequently, some measurements below will be given as a range instead of a direct number.

Broadly, the Ford Transit is separated into three different types of vans: cargo, crew, and passenger. Within each type, other factors dictate what the overall size will be - more on that below.

One important thing to note before we get too far into this discussion is that the width measurements you see on this post always include the mirrors. It is possible to reduce the overall width by folding in the mirrors if you need to fit the Transit into a tight spot.

What Sizes Do Transit Vans Come in?

All three types of Ford Transit come in various sizes depending on which options you select and pair together. The two options that determine overall size are length selection and roof height.

First, you can choose from three length options for your Transit: regular, long, and extra-long. The length of the regular size is between 18.15 and 18.33 feet long. The long size is between 19.63 and 19.80 feet long, and the extra-long is 21.99 feet long.

As for the roof height, you will choose between a low roof, a medium roof, and a high roof. The low roof makes the height of the van between 6.85 and 6.91 feet tall. The medium roof is between 8.26 and 8.44 feet, and the high roof is between 8.98 and 9.20 feet in height.

On average, the Ford Transit van has a length of around 19.5 feet, a width of around 8 feet, and a height of approximately 8 feet. Continue reading for the complete list of the size measurements for every possible combination of van type, length choice, and roof type.

Will a Ford Transit Fit in my Garage?

Interior of a clean garage in a house

Now that we've discussed every possible size combination of the Ford Transit, let's put the size into context. The average garage measures 12 feet by 22 feet. While that number accommodates all of the Transits we've profiled, the real number to be concerned with is the size of a garage door. Specifically, the height of the garage door might give us problems for certain models.

The average garage door is around seven feet tall for both single and double garages. That means that only Ford Transits with a low roof will be able to fit in the average garage.

What are the Interior Dimensions of a Ford Transit Van?

To understand the interior dimensions that result from how big these Ford Transits are, let's look at two models individually. The cargo area in the Transit Cargo Van with regular length, and the low ceiling measures 8.75 feet in length, 5.0 feet in width, and 4.42 feet in height. There is slightly less space between the two wheel-wells than the rest of the cargo area.

On the other hand, the Ford Transit Carexgo with the tra-long length and the high roof is much larger. That combination measures 12.6 feet long, 5.0 feet wide, and 6.7 feet tall at its highest.

How Long is the Cargo Space in a Ford Transit?

The length of the cargo space is one of the better features of the Ford Transit van. For the Cargo version, the space is massive. At the floor level, it measures 10.5 feet for the smallest length model and 14.35 feet for the largest in length. So, there is plenty of room to carry lengthy boards or furniture in this van. Additionally, that horizontal space is occupied by up to five rows of seats in the passenger version of the Transit.

How Big is the Back of a Transit Van?

The Transit van also has a large back opening to help easily load and unload whatever cargo you are carrying. In fact, the rear doors are large no matter which size Transit you choose. First, for the smallest available version with the regular length and low roof, the rear door measures 4.13 feet high and 5.14 feet wide. Second, the largest version with the extra-long length and high roof measures 6.19 feet high and 5.14 feet wide.

So, after discussing all of the interior figures for the Ford Transit, how roomy is it inside? The large exterior profile of the Ford Transit gives the inside plenty of room for cargo and/or passengers. The best way to measure the concept of room for a series of vans is by examining seating and cargo capacity.

First, the Transit Cargo Van has a seating capacity of two and a cargo capacity volume of 280.9 cubic feet for the regular length/low ceiling model and 536.4 cubic feet for the extra-long/high ceiling model. Second, the Transit Crew Van has a seating capacity of five and the same max volume capacities as the regular Cargo version. But for the Crew Van, another important measurement to look at is the Cargo Volume Behind Second Row, which measures between 158.4 and 383.8 cubic feet.

Lastly, the Transit Passenger Van has a seating capacity that can be anywhere between two and 15, depending mainly on the van's length. In the Passenger version, the cargo volume is mostly taken up by seating. So much so that in the 15 seater model, there are only 100.5 cubic feet of storage space behind the fifth row of seating.

The Ford Transit is large on the outside and therefore roomy on the inside. Whether you choose the cargo version or the passenger version, you'll have plenty of room to transport everything you need. But keep in mind this is a huge van. If you need the ability to put your Transit in a garage, make sure you choose a model with a low roof.
