What are parking sensors, and how do they work?

Parking sensors are typically small proximity sensors that send out a small signal that will bounce off any nearby object, informing the sensor of its presence. These sensors are usually either ultrasonic or electromagnetic. Once the sensor detects the presence of a nearby object, it sends a signal to a notification system in the front seat of the car.

Are parking sensors standard?

Parking sensors are standard on certain vehicles. The most common type of parking sensor is the reverse style found on cars starting from model year around 2010. Reverse parking sensors have typically been less common, but as you can see from the extensive list, they are very present on 2021 models. Still, they are not always a standard feature on vehicles. Whether or not it's included on the base trim largely depends on the make and model.

Can you add front parking sensors to any car?

There are several aftermarket parking sensors that you can install on your vehicle. Usually, installing these sensors is difficult and involves removing the front bumper and adding wiring to connect sensors to dashboard notification equipment. Because of this, it's a good idea to consult a professional before attempting a self-installation of parking sensors of any kind. When you're ready to begin an installation, you can find several types of parking sensors on Amazon.

How do I know if my car has parking sensors?

If you are unsure if your car has parking sensors, there is a method to check. You should look at your dashboard to see if you have a parking sensor signal or a button that turns the function on. If you are unsure, you should check your vehicle's user manual or consult the manufacturer's website for more information.

In Closing

Forward parking sensors can add a whole other level of safety and peace to your driving and parking experience. These types of sensors are not as common as their reverse parking sensor counterparts, so be careful to reference this list or search on the manufacturer's website if you're shopping for a new SUV.
