Cab Options For Pickups
The Regular Cab
This cab size is most common in smaller pickup trucks. This style has one row of seating and only two doors. Regular cab truck models can seat three fully grown adults.
The Extended Cab
Extended cab pickup trucks give a bit more room for passengers. These trucks will have room behind the front seats for more passengers, usually no more than two. Depending on the model extended cab you’re looking at, you might find one with only one set of doors. Other models have a set of smaller doors behind the front seat, so that accessing the back seats is easier.
The Crew Cab/Double Cab
The largest cab available is the crew cab. Sometimes, crew cab and double cab are used interchangeably, though some manufacturers do have a defined difference between the two. We’ll look into that later in this post.
2021 Double Cab Pickups
The 2021 Toyota Tacoma has six available trim levels for you to consider: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro. This model truck has two cab sizes to pick from. The Access Cab will seat four people comfortably. The Double Cab will seat five. This model pickup truck also comes with a standard V6 engine.
Chevy’s 2021 Silverado has double cabs and crew cabs available in multiple trim levels. The Work Truck 4×2 and the Work Truck 4×4 have both of these cab options available, as well as in 5.75 foot and 6.6 foot bed lengths.
The 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 has seven trim levels available. Like the Chevy Silverado, the double cab and crew cab trim levels are offered with 4×2 and 4x4s, as well as 5.75 foot and 6.6 foot bed lengths.
Toyota’s 2021 Hilux pickup truck comes with multiple trim levels and engine options. This year’s offerings are the Rogue, the Rugged, the SR, the SR High-rider, the SR+, the SR5, the SR5 High-rider, the SR5+, the Workmate, and the Workmate+. Each available trim level has the double cab as an option, as well as multiple variations of bed length and engine size. Note, however, that Hilux is not available in the United States at this time.
The 2021 Jeep Gladiator has four trim options: The Sport, the Rubicon, the Mohave, and the Overland. All are crew cab/double cab pickup trucks.
Nissan’s 2021 Frontier pickup truck has four available trim levels. The trims you have to choose from are the S, the SV, the PRO-X, and the PRO 4-X. Crew cabs/double cabs are available in all four trim levels.
For 2021, Nissan’s Titan pickup truck was designed with five trim levels and two cab options. The 2021 trim levels you can choose from are the Titan SV, the Titan Pro-4X, Titan SL, Titan PRO Platinum Reserve, and the Titan S. The Titan S and the Titan SV are the only two trim levels available in king cabs, while all five trim levels are available with crew cabs/double cabs.
The F150 from Ford has a variety of trim levels available for 2021. This model year’s trims are the XL, the XLT, the Lariat, the King Ranch, the Raptor, the Platinum, and the Limited. For a premium, all trim levels have crew cabs/double cabs as options.
The Ford Ranger has a total of thirteen configurations for the 2021 year models. These configurations are spread over three available trim level options, the XL, the XLT, and the Lariat. Each trim level has crew cab/double cabs as an option, as well as super cabs.
The 2021 Honda Ridgeline is a popular midsized pickup truck that is available in four different trim level options: Sport, RTL, RTL-E, and the Black Edition. All trim levels are crew cab/double cab and come equipped with a 3.5 liter V6 engine.
What is a double cab truck?
A true double cab pickup truck is manufactured with two sets of doors, with a full row of seats in the rear. The secondary doors leading to this back row are narrower than the truck’s front doors. The bench seat in the rear of the cab is enough to comfortably accommodate up to three fully grown adults.
Double cab trucks are sometimes confused with crew cab trucks, as both have double sets of cab doors. The difference between these two trim options is in the rear doors’ size and the room in the back row. Crew cab trucks have two full-size sets of cab doors, rather than the one full-size and one smaller set that you’ll find in double cab trims. The back row seating is roomier and more comfortable in the crew cab trucks.
Even though there can be a defined difference between crew cab trucks and double cab models, some automotive manufacturers will use these two terms interchangeably. When you’re shopping for a truck, it will be important to know if the available room in the back row is suited for your needs.
Should I get a crew cab or extended cab?
Whether you select a crew cab pickup or one with an extended cab will depend on what you will be using the truck for the majority of the time. Before we make a recommendation, let’s look at the difference between the two options.
Earlier in this post, we revealed that a crew cab had two full sets of doors and a full bench seat in the rear. This will easily accommodate up to five adults comfortably, as the back seats in these models are spacious and comfortable.
An extended cab pickup truck has an extra row of seats in the rear but not nearly as roomy as the crew cab models. The doors are also much smaller, and some don’t even have doors at all. Models without rear doors have the back row of seating accessed by the driver and passenger doors of the cab.
Crew cabs are a great option if you are traveling regularly with several adults. These model trucks are used for work crews going to and from job sites. They also make for a great truck for families, as they provide the room and the safety that a larger vehicle has to offer.
What is the average cost of a full-size pickup truck?
If you’re shopping for a full-sized pickup truck, you’ll first want to make certain that the price range of these vehicles is within your budget. The average price of a full-sized pickup truck is $51,000, not including the luxury models – these average nearly $70,000.
There are many factors that can increase or decrease the price of the full-sized pickup truck you are considering. Bed length, engine size, and onboard technology packages are all substantial reasons why there is such a variation in the same model truck prices. Similarly, adding tow packages to your pickup truck will also impact the vehicle’s final sticker price.
What is the average cost of a midsize pickup truck?
Should a full-sized pickup truck not be within your budget, you might consider downsizing and getting a midsized truck. While less roomy than a full-sized model, a midsized pickup truck still offers a rear seat and plenty of room in the bed for hauling cargo. Model trucks that are midsized average $35,000 for a new model.
As with full-sized pickup trucks, the sticker price is impacted by other factors and options you might choose. The retailer should give you a list of all available options and packages with the prices of each broken down in an easy-to-read format.
Pickup trucks are built with numerous cab options manufactured to fit specific needs. The double cab models are popular across all makes of pickup trucks due to the level of comfort they offer and the ease of entering and exiting the rear of the cab. While these types of trucks might be out of the price range of your family’s budget, you can always consider getting a midsized truck for less of an investment.
