To become an Uber driver, you need to meet a few requirements. These include:

  • Meet the minimum driving age in your city [usually 18-21].
  • Have at least one year of US-licensed driving experience [three if you're under 25].
  • Have a valid US driver's license.
  • Own/drive a qualifying four-door vehicle.

On top of these, you will also need to undergo a background check, including criminal history and any past driving records/incidents, before starting with Uber.

Can I Share A Car With Another Uber Driver?

Yes! Two separate Uber drivers can share a vehicle as long as they aren't together while driving. According to Uber, each driver will need to assign the car to themselves for the duration of their shift, which will prohibit anyone else from driving it.

As we mentioned, Uber also requires all drivers to be listed on their car's insurance, so even if you're sharing with a friend, the two of you will need to get added to the policy.

How Do I Add Another Driver To My Uber Account?

If one of your friends or family members also wants to drive your vehicle for Uber, you will need to add them to your driver account. To do this:

  1. Head to partners.uber.com and sign in to your account.
  2. Select the "Drivers" tab from the main menu.
  3. Click the "Add Driver" button.
  4. Complete the required forms, and you've successfully added a driver!

Remember, your added driver will also need to undergo a criminal background and driving history screening, so this process may take a few days to complete.

How Many Drivers Can I Add To My Uber Account?

Although Uber doesn't have a limit, adding one other person to your account is most common. Considering that only one person will be able to drive the vehicle at a time, it's usually not a great idea to have more than two people registered for Uber.

That said, as long as everyone in your driver account has a clean background check and is on the car's insurance policy, they are allowed to use it for Uber.

What Is The Lowest Car Year For Uber?

Your car will need to be 15 years or newer to qualify for Uber. This means, as long as the vehicle you're driving is from 2007 or after, it's fine to use for rideshare.

With that said, Uber does have certain cosmetic requirements for its vehicles, meaning your car needs to be damage-free and clean. If your vehicle doesn't meet these requirements, you may be able to drive for Uber Eats instead, which you can apply for here.

Can I Drive A Leased Car For Uber?

Yes, you can drive a leased car for Uber. In general, you won't want to do this because of how many miles it will add to your vehicle, but if you only plan on Ubering part-time, we think it's a good idea.

That said, you could also drive a leased car full time with Uber and buy it at the end of your lease to avoid mileage charges, so there are ways to get around this.

Can You Rent A Car Through Uber?

If you want to drive for Uber but don't have a car, it is possible to rent one through them. According to Uber's rental application, you can expect to pay a starting price of $260 per week to rent a car from one of their partners, so this isn't cheap.

Considering that the average four-door vehicle costs about $300-$400 a month to lease/payback, renting through Uber is almost three times that. Again, you might be better off leasing a cheaper car directly from a dealership and using your Uber earnings to pay its lease, which is our recommendation.

Is Renting A Car Through Uber Worth It?

Although Uber's rental program can help drivers get on the road, we don't think it's entirely worth it. Like we covered above, Uber charges almost three times the average monthly lease to rent through one of their partners, which doesn't seem very fair to us.

On top of that, drivers would need to work full-time (or more) to afford their rental car and other monthly expenses, which may not be possible for everyone.

How Much Does Uber Pay Per Mile?

Although there isn't a set amount, you can expect to make about $0.83 per mile driving for Uber. According to a study done by Stilt, Uber rates vary by location, with places like New York at around $1.10 per mile, while Atlanta drivers only made about $0.66.

Of course, a place like New York City will have more people to move around than somewhere like Atlanta, but this could mean less money for smaller city/suburban drivers.

How Much Do Uber Drivers Make Per Hour?

In general, you can expect to make about $21 per hour driving for Uber. That said, not all drivers will make the same, accounting for tips and other bonuses, so your hourly rate may be slightly different.

Location can also influence how much an Uber driver makes, with bigger cities paying the highest hourly wages and smaller ones paying about $2-$3 less. Again, the cost of living in big cities will be greater than a small town or suburban area, so this makes sense with all things considered.

Is Uber Better Than Lyft?

When it comes to Uber being better than Lyft, this depends on who you talk to. Between the two rideshare companies, Uber offers more ride options than Lyft, which means more earning potential for drivers.

That said, Uber doesn't score as high for driver satisfaction compared to Lyft, so there may be a difference in company culture. On top of that, Uber pays each week while Lyft offers payment after every ride, which might be better for some people.

Do Drivers Make More Money With Lyft Or Uber?

Although it varies, drivers can expect to make more with Lyft than with Uber. Even with many of Uber's ride options, Lyft tends to pay its drivers more per mile, leaving them with extra money in their pocket.

According to The College Investor, Lyft drivers average about $25.73 per hour, while our previous Uber estimate fell at around $21. Of course, that's not to say it's impossible to make more money driving for Uber, but it isn't as likely as with Lyft.

Does Uber Offer Insurance For Its Drivers?

Yes, Uber will offer insurance for you and your vehicle if anything happens. If you get into an accident while Uber is activated in your car, your liability to third parties is covered by the companies $1 million insurance policy.

On top of that, Uber will also cover up to $50,000 of bodily injury if you get in an accident between trips and up to $25,000 for any related property damage, so you know you're in good hands.

Is It Worth Being An Uber Driver?

If you're on the fence about driving for Uber, we think it is a great way to make extra cash. As long as you go into it with moderate expectations, Uber should be an enjoyable experience and a great way to meet new people each shift.

Of course, rideshare driving isn't perfect by any means, but if you don't mind putting some extra mileage on your car and want to make around $20 per hour, it might be worth trying.

To Wrap It Up

Whether you've thought about Uber driving or want to make some extra money, getting a car to use can be tricky. From what we found, you can Uber with someone else's car, as long as you're listed as an insured driver on its insurance policy.

It's also possible to have multiple drivers on one Uber account, although you won't be able to use the vehicle while the other person is driving. Another benefit to driving with Uber is the companies' extensive insurance coverage, protecting you, your car, and any passengers.

Regardless, remember to fill out all of Uber's required forms before driving, and don't be afraid to get out there and meet some new people!
